We all know the nuisance that is the common fly; they buzz around relentlessly, looking for food. Within seconds of landing on food, they can contaminate it with unseen faeces that can cause us to be ill, plus they are always annoying and keep coming in large numbers.
But, on occasions, for a variety of reasons, flies can become a real problem and spotting the odd one or two becomes a full time job as you seem to be infested with them.
Types of Flies
There is the common house fly, the nuisance that buzzes around incessantly. Adults are around 5 to 8mm in length and have been proven to spread dysentery and salmonella, both dangerous to humans. The females lay their eggs in decaying food or faeces hence the need to keep rubbish, composts bins covered and any animal waste removed that is close to your property. This will stop the female laying her eggs and prevent infestations of the common housefly within your home or property.
But, there are thousands of different species of flies but here at Northwest Pest Patrol the most common fly problem we deal with are blow flies and cluster flies, as well as the common house fly
The Blow Fly – known as the green or blue bottle, they can reach up to 12 mm in length, with large bristly bodies, and are light green or blue in color, hence their name. Again, they lay their eggs on rotting organic matter, which the larvae then feed on as they grow and develop.
Cluster flies – measuring between 6 and 12 mm in length, they are darker in color, being brown or golden in color. Their larvae are parasites in earthworms with the adults clustering in loft and roof spaces in the winter months, which is why they are such a nuisance.
We use a variety of different methods and treatments to rid you of your fly infestation or nuisance but again, prevention is cheaper than cure hence we provide, as part of our pest control service, robust advice so that infestation do not happen again.
